A patio carries less load, not less soil movement
Compared to a driveway, a patio is a lighter job: no vehicle load, a thinner slab is acceptable, and decorative finishes are far more common than plain broom concrete. What a patio does NOT get a pass on is the soil underneath it. The expansive clay under a Stafford yard swells and shrinks with the seasons regardless of what's sitting on top of it, and a lighter patio slab is arguably more visibly affected by that differential movement than a driveway is, because the panels are smaller, the finish is often decorative (so a crack or a lipped joint is more visible), and a patio typically sits closer to landscaping, irrigation, and trees, the exact features that make moisture exposure across a yard uneven in the first place. Build basics for a patio on this soil
- Thickness. The 4-inch (100 mm) minimum for residential slab-on-ground, including patios, is set by ACI 332, the residential concrete code. That's distinct from the driveway thickness reference, which comes from the parking-lot design handbook. A thinner patio slab is more common in practice than a thinner driveway, but 4 inches is still the floor. Two flatwork job types share this minimum: patios and sidewalks/walkways both fall under it.
- Reinforcement and joints still matter. A patio's lighter load doesn't reduce the clay's differential movement, so the same base-prep and control-joint logic from the driveway and spine pages applies: compacted subgrade, a #57 stone base course separating the slab from the active clay layer, and joint spacing at 24โ36 times the slab thickness (the tighter end under Stafford's hot-dry-windy placement season). Skipping these on a patio "because it's just a patio" is exactly how a decorative slab ends up faulted at the joints within a season or two.
Finish options, and where the clay-plus-finish story matters most
- Broom finish is the plain, slip-resistant default and the lowest cost.
- Stamped / decorative is patterned and colored to mimic stone, brick, or tile. Runs roughly $10โ$22 per square foot, with stamping adding about $6โ$10 per square foot over plain concrete for the color hardener, release agent, stamp labor, and sealer. This is where the clay mechanism has the highest cost of getting it wrong: a crack or a faulted joint on plain broom concrete is a repair; the same fault line running through a stamped pattern is much more visually obvious and harder to disguise in a patch. - Exposed aggregate strips the surface mortar to reveal the decorative stone underneath. Durable and slip-resistant, priced roughly $7โ$18 per square foot, about $2โ$3 per square foot over plain concrete.
The right-of-way note, if a patio ever meets the property line
Stamped and colored concrete is commonly prohibited in the public right-of-way, the strip a municipality controls near a sidewalk or street. That rule is aimed at driveway aprons more than patios, since most patios sit well inside the property line, but it's worth flagging on any project near the front of a lot. The exact rule is jurisdiction-specific; confirm with Stafford's public-works department before assuming a decorative finish is allowed close to the right-of-way.

Repair, resurface, or replace
The same decision spine applies here as on driveways: seal cosmetic cracks once the slab has stopped moving, lift a settled-but-sound panel with slabjacking or polyjacking, resurface a structurally sound but worn or dated surface, or tear out and replace a heaved or structurally failed slab.
